Swiss EAGLE

General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag announced December 05, 2019, that it signed a contract with armasuisse on November 18th, 2019, for the delivery of 100 protected EAGLE 6×6 reconnaissance vehicles for the Swiss Army. The EAGLE 6×6 was selected after an international competition conducted by armasuisse, the Swiss federal office for defence procurement. This first order of the EAGLE 6×6 is a milestone for the latest development of the EAGLE vehicle family.

Switzerland awards contract to General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag to deliver 100 EAGLE 6×6 reconnaissance vehicles

The 100 EAGLE 6×6 vehicles will be the vehicle platform of the tactical reconnaissance system «TASYS». TASYS will be used to gather intelligence for the Swiss Armed Forces including support of civil authorities. It consists of an EAGLE V 6×6 carrier vehicle, a multi-sensor system mounted on a telescopic mast, and a data processing system. For self-protection, the highly-mobile EAGLE V 6×6 TASYS is armoured and equipped with a remotely controlled weapon station. The vehicle offers sufficient payload reserves to allow for future improvements, such as the integration of additional sensors. The EAGLE V 6×6 TASYS starts production in 2020 and will be fielded between 2023 and 2025.

Besides the Swiss Army the EAGLE V 4×4 is also extensively used by both Denmark and Germany, where it is very popular with the troops. The further development of the EAGLE V 4×4 into the EAGLE V 6×6 was inspired by operational experience and the need for a vehicle with increased useful volume, more payload, very compact exterior dimensions, as well as constant high mobility and maximized protection. «We are very proud that the Swiss Army is the first customer to introduce the EAGLE V 6×6», says Oliver Dürr, Vice President Wheeled Vehicles and Managing Director of General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag.

Facts about the EAGLE V

The EAGLE V is available in 4×4 and 6×6 versions and is one of the most modern protected wheeled vehicles in its class. The EAGLE has already proven its efficiency and reliability in various military missions. Due to its power reserves, the EAGLE offers an ideal platform to meet both current and future requirements. In addition to its excellent protection against mines and improvised explosive devices, the EAGLE V 6×6 offers a high payload and a large transport volume, within very compact dimensions. With its unique axle and drive system, the EAGLE V delivers off-road mobility and on-road driving safety.

General Dynamics European Land Systems Presents the new Piranha 3+ – the next Generation of Piranha 3 Wheeled Armored Vehicle

The new Piranha 3+ was developed in response to customer requirements for increased levels of protection, off road mobility and inherent growth for the future. The new Piranha 3+ vehicle also incorporates lessons from over 4,500 Piranha 3 and Light Armored Vehicles (LAV) operated by 13 customers worldwide including in military operations and peace keeping missions.

Piranha 3+ – Protection

The new Piranha 3+ offers a completely modular protection system that has been designed with the flexibility to allow modern armed forces to meet their current and future protection needs. The modular protection system has been developed to fully protect occupants operating within a complex threat environment, as specified in the latest protection system requirements, while being able to be tailored to meet specific theatre and mission needs.

Piranha 3+ – Mobility

General Dynamics European Land Systems recognizes that mobility is protection and accordingly, the new Piranha 3+ offers an enhanced drive system with 30% more engine power and an improved driveline that delivers the best cross country mobility for a vehicle in this weight class. The new Piranha 3+ can be fitted with either a conventional or a hydro-pneumatic suspension system to balance performance, comfort, maintainability and cost as needed. The top speed has been increased to 68 mph/110 km/h with a range of over 621 miles/1,000 km to give the vehicle an even greater autonomy. As with all Piranha platforms, the new Piranha 3+ can be equipped with an amphibious drive to operate as a marine infantry vehicle.

Piranha 3+ – Inherent Growth

In addition to the large internal volume, ten percent payload growth, and fully modular protection system, the new Piranha 3+ provides reserve electrical power to meet the electrical needs of future systems and personal equipment needs and spare cooling capacity with its modular Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)/ Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) System. By allowing for inherent growth within the new Piranha 3+, customers will have the flexibility to operate the vehicle through-out the full service life in a constantly changing world.

Piranha 3+ – Proven Technology ready for operation

The new Piranha 3+ has a proven heritage of over 4,500 Piranha 3 and LAV vehicles used by 13 customers in global military operations and peace keeping missions. The development of the new Piranha 3+ focused on enhancing the performance and capabilities of these existing vehicles through the integration of proven concepts and technologies. The driveline which is unmatched in this class of military vehicles has already been introduced into service in the LAV in North America. While the power pack, providing 30% more power, uses the proven Caterpillar C13 engine and the ZF 7HP902S transmission. Future customers will also be able to leverage off 37 variants of the Piranha 3 vehicle that are already in service including Armored Personnel Carrier, Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), command and control, ambulance, direct fire support, recovery and engineering vehicle.

General Dynamics European Land Systems company also remains committed to support existing customers which is why the majority of the concepts and technologies integrated within the new Piranha 3+ are available as upgrades to existing Piranha vehicles.

The contract was signed on December 15, 2015, and has a value of approximately $600 Million. Deliveries will commence in 2018 and continue through 2023. The PIRANHA 5 will gradually replace the M113 and will become the backbone of the Danish Army´s armored vehicle fleet. The contract is the culmination of an extensive evaluation and acquisition project and concludes one of the largest armored vehicle competitions in Europe.

«It is important that we invest in the Danish Defence. PIRANHA 5 is better protected than the ageing, armoured personnel carriers available to the army today, so with this purchase we are enhancing the army’s ability to carry out its future tasks», said Peter Christensen, Minister of Defence of Denmark.

«General Dynamics European Land Systems is very proud to have received this contract. It underlines the confidence and satisfaction of our Danish customer with our PIRANHA 5 platform, especially with the very high protection against ballistic threats, mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and the excellent mobility both on- and off-road», said Alfonso Ramonet, President of General Dynamics European Land Systems. «The PIRANHA 5 won in a highly competitive tender».

The contract was signed through General Dynamics European Land Systems – Mowag, the Switzerland-based subsidiary of General Dynamics European Land Systems.
